From Harrisonburg (intersection of Interstate 66 and US-33)

Entrance to Second Mountain Trail - (No public exit. One way in/out)

Follow US-33 W to RT 612 / Peak Mountain Rd. Take a right on RT 612. In less than 1.5 miles, RT 612 takes a left turn. Be sure to follow RT 612 to the left, on Peak Mountain Rd. RT 612 ends at Hopkins Gap Rd. Take a left on Hopkins Gap Rd and go about 2,000 feet. Take a left onto the dirt road next to Gospel Hill Mennonite Church, onto Long Run Rd.

When you get to the top of the mountain, 4 trails come to a 4-way intersection. Take a left and you are on Second Mountain Trail.

The optional trail, Dictum Ridge, is off Second Mountain Trail, at the Rocky Run ATV Trail staging area and parking lot. This is a fun trail but expect scratches from small branches and bushes. The trail is tight.

Flagpole Knob – Easy / South Gate (Almost completely paved. Very light ride to the mountain top)

Follow US-33 W, turn left on RT 613, turn left on to VA-257 W in Ashby. VA-257 (Berry Branch Rd) becomes 924. Follow 924 (Berry Branch Rd) until it becomes Forrest Rd 85. 85 will split to 85-4 and 85A. Stay to the right and follow 85A to the knob, on your right.

Flagpole Knob – Easy / North Gate (A bit more challenging. Damage possible if you don’t pay attention.)

Continue to follow 85A North for a few hundred feet. Take a left onto 227 / Dunkle Hollow Rd. 227 / Dunkle Hollow Rd becomes Switzer Lake Rd. Follow Switzer Lake Rd north to US-33. Take a right on US-33 E, to Harrisonburg.
